How Does God’s Judgement Fit into Universal Reconciliation?
I have noticed that many have a misconception about Universal Reconciliation. This is probably true because there are several different types of Universalism, many of which are rooted in a New Age kind of philosophy. They find themselves granting everyone the ability to choose their own beliefs because they do not hold to the idea of inerrant scriptures, depending instead on human reason when exploring religious ideas.
This is not that.
Biblical Universalism, instead, advances the idea that scripture has always pointed to the plan of God to reconcile all things through the peace purchased by Christ on the cross. So, while all are reconciled in the end, it is through the judgments of God that restoration is accomplished.
All of those “in Christ” are judged by the work Jesus accomplished on the cross. Humanity, outside of Christ, is judged for the works done in the flesh with the White Throne and the Lake of Fire in view. The difference is that the Biblical Universalist no longer sees the judgements of God as punitive and everlasting, but we see them as the corrective and necessary actions of a loving heavenly Father who will chastise for only as long as it is necessary to accomplish surrender and repentance in those being judged.
